Makar Sankranti marks the commencement of the Sun's journey to the Northern Hemisphere (Makara raasi ), signifying the onset of Uttarayana Punyakalam, and is a day of celebration all over the country.
mainly in the northen regions of the india its even called as pongal. but the festval is very grandly celebrated in the southern staes of india in Andhra predesh and Karnataka.

This festval is mainly celbrated by the farmers as they get the corp in hand by this time, and is the end of the harvest season .with the new crop grains in hand the people prepare the sweet dishes and offer it to god.

Pongal is the only festival of Hindu that follows a solar calendar and is celebrated on the fourteenth of January every year.
Pongal has astronomical significance: it marks the beginning of Uttarayana, the Sun's movement northward for a six month period. In Hinduism, Uttarayana is considered auspicious, as opposed to Dakshinaayana, or the southern movement of the sun. All important events are scheduled during this period. Makara Sankranthi refers to the event of the Sun entering the zodiac sign of Makara or Capricorn.
